Prospective Students

Thank you very much for your interest in my research. I appreciate your taking the time to read these web pages.

Students holding major scholarships, e.g. NSERC or other national scholarships, are urged to apply at any time, and should indicate this in their communication. NSERC students in the CARIS Lab are eligible for top up scholarships.

Each year, I receive a large number of inquiries and applications from candidates like yourself, interested in pursuing research and academic studies in our laboratory. Unfortunately, only a few applications can be successful each year, as I can only accommodate a limited number of students and researchers.

I am currently looking for students with robotics, controls, hci, machine learning, psychology, human factors, signal processing, and/or computer vision backgrounds interested in working on projects related to humans interacting with robotics in manufacturing, healthcare and personal assistance applications.

Due to overwhelming email inquiries I an unable answer emailed expressions of interest or requests for “advice”.  We do accept a small number of students every year and I request that you refrain from emailing me and invest your energies in your formal application instead, which I will review. For more information see my FAQ. I will review formal applications to our department that meet UBC Graduate Studies requirements and indicate interest in studying in my lab.  The choice of whether or not to apply is UP TO YOU. Applicants who bombard me with email or telephone requests will not be considered favourably.

In order to be considered for graduate studies you must formally apply to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UBC. All applications are carefully reviewed by staff and faculty in the department.

International students applying from countries with military service requirements should check with the appropriate authorities to ensure that they are permitted to leave their home country in order to study abroad, prior to initiating the application process.

Students are encouraged to formally apply for admission via the Internet. The address is: http://www.grad.ubc.ca/application/. Applicants must have a valid Visa or MasterCard credit card in order to apply through this facility.

Application and document deadlines for Mechanical Engineering is February 1st for international students, and for scholarship consideration for all students for September admission. The Deadline for domestic students is May 1st; however please note that students wishing to be considered for major entrance scholarships and for the invitational department tour must apply by February 1.
